The group was formed in 1994, and has met in a variety of venues. Since LIP’s support began in 2006, the DEAForum has worked with a range of service providers to look at how to improve services for deaf people in Leeds.

Membership of the DEAForum consists of born deaf people and those who became deaf throughout childhood, who attended British Sign Language (BSL) and non-BSL medium schools.

The Deaforum’s purpose is to:

DEAForum

i) make sure deaf people's views and concerns are addressed by service providers

ii) build the the capacity of deaf people to be involved more effectively in planning services

iii) provide access to involvement training that meets the needs of deaf people

iv) make sure that the Deaf cultural model is incorporated with the ethos the Social Model of Disability, in accordance with LIP aims and principles

This group is entirely in accordance with the Aims, Principles and Objectives of LIP (users of Community Care services” to have a bigger say in the services they use”.

The forum welcomes all deaf people who use BSL or English to attend meetings, which are held on the last Monday of each month at the Leeds Involvement Project office from 4pm to 6pm.

BSL/English interpreters are available at all meetings and there is a hearing loop provided. We are a friendly and lively group and hold a social event each year.
